“Unite, Compete, Excel!” – UNILAG VC Heralds 11th FASU Games with Press Conference

At an exciting Press Conference held on Thursday, August 22, 2024, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS revealed details of the upcoming 11th Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games, dubbed “Lagos 2024.”

The event, scheduled from September 20-29, 2024, marks a historic milestone as the first-ever joint hosting of the Games by two institutions: UNILAG and Lagos State University (LASU).

The Vice Chancellor emphasized the significance of this collaboration between a federal and state institution, stating, “This will deliver to the world of collegiate sports a different model of hosting the Games. A model of cooperation and collaboration between Federal and State Institutions in Lagos.”

She pointed out that the Games will utilize venues across Lagos, with the opening ceremony at the University of Lagos on September 21 and the closing ceremony at Lagos State University on September 28.

She added that Lagos 2024 will feature additional events including a scientific conference, Vice-Chancellors’ meeting, and FISU/FASU Strategic Dialogue.

According to her, “fresh from successfully hosting the 26th Nigerian Universities Games (NUGA) in 2022, UNILAG aims to improve on that experience”.

The Vice Chancellor affirmed the university’s commitment to fostering sports excellence and contributing to youth empowerment across Africa.

Her words, “As one of the host institutions, we are committed to making the 11th FASU Games a resounding success.”

Professor Ogunsola called for support from businesses and individuals of goodwill, emphasizing that such partnership/sponsorship is “an investment in the future of our youth, the strengthening of African unity, and the visibility of your companies.”

As Lagos prepares to welcome athletes from potentially all 43 FASU member countries, the 11th FASU Games promises to be a celebration of African unity, youth potential, and sporting excellence. FASU Games, a prestigious continental collegiate sports event, will bring together over 1,500 athletes and officials from universities across Africa. Participants will compete in 17 sports, including athletics, football, basketball, and swimming, among others.

The event not only commemorates 50 years since the inaugural FASU Games but also showcases Lagos as a hub for collegiate sports in Africa.
